My mom gave me a laptop that she locked herself out of. We have tried to figure out the administrator password but no luck. I created an account for myself, but I still need her administrator password in order to make certain changes to the laptop.

Is there any way to bypass the password or reset it? I Googled various methods but everything required administrator permissions. I have no discs to reinstall Windows 8.

If your Mother cant remember her Password { Assuming she has Admin Rights and is the Owner }....

.....then how did you Login and create an account for yourself.

Otherwise Google - NTpassword Reset  or search within Bleeping as many have asked the same question   eg: Password Reset.

Or look at https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-reset-a-windows-8-password-2626230

Yeah, this sounds like something a customer asked me to do, but I wasn't willing to risk the legal stuff that goes with doing that. As I recall, unless she had previously made a password reset disk (usually on a floppy or CD-R), she's legally out of luck.

Try searching for your solution on a non-Google search engine like Duckduckgo.

Google decides what you can and can't read, sometimes you have to move away from big brother to get the truth answer you are looking for.

I was looking for a way to do this myself and found the answer on YouTube:

This video talks about getting back into Windows 10, but the steps are the same for Windows 8.x with only minor differences.

Edit: WHOA! I didn't expect the YouTube video to embed in my post!

Did it work?

Since the computer used to be your mom's, I would advise that you reinstall Windows and start fresh.

Boot into Recovery and select the option to restore the system to factory default settings.

p.s. You never know what she may have installed on the system over the years.

Almost all laptops have a recovery partition, do a search of the make and model using the term factory reset.  Two of mine it is a simple two key sequence then sit back in short order it is back to the wait was when new.  You can dump the bloat ware using PCdecrappifier located in the down load section here on this site it will give you back a fair bit of HD space.

Do a clean Windows reinstall is not a good idea, anything saved on computer can be lost, the login passwrod can be easily removed.

Reset admin password is a good way to bypass Windows 8 login screen,or insert a password reset disk, its job is to reset any login password,i have previous experience using xxxxxxxx. It ran on my computer for nearly an hour, and then the password was cracked by one of them.

Mod edit :-  According to Malwarebytes the second link contained malware, I have removed it.

There is no other working account on your computer, and I guess MS will not work for you. Try Ophcrack (although the steps are complicated) or WinPWD.

https://ophcrack.sourceforge.io/

https://www.winpwd.com/

The same thing is that the password reset disk is contacted. The principle of deleting the original password, the obvious difference is that WinPWD is easier to operate.

OP has not posted since initial topic in 2019.  I think that this one can be closed...I see no need for an omnibus topic on passwords in this forum.
