As part of my biannual electronic “spring cleaning”, I change out the passwords for every one of my devices and online accounts.

I was nearly done with the whole business, and my Wi-Fi was the only one left that needed a new password.

Unfortunately, since I don’t access my router settings too often, I didn’t note down the password, and Google Chrome didn’t save it either.

Because I was obsessed with securing every bit of software and hardware I had, I set a different admin password to access the router from the default one and forgot about it.

I had to change the Wi-Fi password too. So I set out to find if there was any way to reset the Xfinity router’s admin password.

I noted everything I found out and compiled this guide to help you reset the admin password on your Xfinity router.

To reset an Xfinity Router admin password, press and hold the reset button on the back of your Xfinity Router and release it after 30 seconds.

The router will reset itself to factory defaults, along with the admin credentials.

What Happens When You Reset Xfinity Router?

Resetting your Xfinity router will clear all data and settings and restore them to factory defaults.

Since its return to its factory default state, you will need to go through a configuration process to get it running again.

You can reset to fix issues where the Wi-Fi stops showing up or when your router cannot connect to the internet at all.

A reset is not just limited to changing a password. You can perform a reset if your internet is not working as intended or your devices cannot connect to Wi-Fi. But be aware that the reset will wipe all settings.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Resetting Xfinity Router

You can only access the reset button of most Xfinity routers with a paper clip. So make sure to get hold of one before you attempt the reset procedure.

You should have access to the router, obviously, either by Wi-Fi or ethernet cable.

You also have to know the router’s password, which is usually a default if you haven’t set it up.

You can find the default credentials in the next section of this guide.

You can find the default Wi-Fi password itself on a nameplate under the Wi-Fi router.

Default Admin Password and ID for Xfinity Routers

By default, Xfinity allots your Wi-Fi router with a default username and password.

It is recommended that you change the login password later to protect the router from unauthorized access.

The default username and password for an Xfinity router:

  • Username: admin
  • Password: password

Resetting the Xfinity Router Admin Password

Two methods let you factory reset the router and the router admin username and password.

Method 1 – Reset Through the Admin Interface

  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Type “10.0.0.1” in the address bar without quotes
  3. Login to the router with the default username and password that you saw earlier.
  4. The reset page can be different depending on the model of your router, but as a general instruction, follow this:
    1. Troubleshooting > Reset/Restore Gateway > Restore Factory Settings
  5. Select the Factory Reset/ Restore option
  6. Wait for the router to reboot

Method 2 – Pressing the Reset Button

  1. When your Xfinity router is on, press and hold the Reset button for 30 seconds. In some models, you might need to get a paperclip to reach the recessed button.
  2. While the button is being held, unplug the router from the wall outlet. Keep the button held for 30 seconds more.
  3. Plug the router back into the wall outlet. Keep the button held throughout. Wait another 30 seconds and release the button.

If you have followed these steps to the letter, then you have successfully reset your Xfinity router!

Configuring Xfinity Router After Reset

After a reset, you will need to configure the router to access the internet again. To do this,

  1. Open a browser window
  2. Type “10.0.0.1” in the address bar
  3. Enter the default username and password and log in
  4. Navigate to the Wi-Fi section and select Configure Changes
  5. Go to the Network tab and configure the Dial-Up connection/DSL methods, SSID and Security settings

Changing Xfinity Wi-Fi Name (SSID) And Password

After a reset, you would need to change the default Wi-Fi name and password.

To do this, open a browser window again and follow these steps:

  1. Type on “10.0.0.1” in the address bar.
  2. Login to the admin tool
  3. Select Gateway > Connection > WiFi
  4. Under Private Wi-Fi Network, edit the SSID. Create one for each band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) if applicable.
  5. To change the Wi-Fi password, type the new password in the Network Password filed and click Save Settings.

You have successfully changed the password! You have to reconnect all your devices to the Wi-Fi again with the new password. You will need to do this every time you change your password too.

Stop Using Default Passwords

The default passwords that your Wi-Fi router or any device comes with are very unsecure to be used as a regular password.

Since they are usually the same and easy to guess, anything protected by these credentials will never be secure.

Lastly, remember to change your passwords for every service that you use so that the password is kept fresh and won’t fall into the wrong hands from data breaches.

Use a password manager like LastPass or if you don’t want to pay, use the inbuilt password manager that Google Chrome, Safari, and most other browsers come with.
