Klarna
Klarna for Shopify Payments is a secure local payment method available in certain European countries that lets you offer your customers a range of flexible payment options when paying for their orders. When a customer chooses a Klarna payment option at checkout, the funds for the order are paid out in your next Shopify Payments payout, and the customer pays for the order according to the payment option they choose. Offering Klarna at checkout gives your customers more options when paying for orders.
Using Klarna on Shopify Payments provides your customers with multiple safe and easy payment options. Your customers can choose to pay for their orders immediately, by invoice, or through installments using direct debit or credit card.
The Klarna for Shopify Payments options that your customer can choose at checkout depend on the Shopify Payments region that your store is based in, where your customer is located, and the currency that your customer selects.

Payment processing with Klarna for Shopify Payments
When a customer places an order and uses a Klarna payment option to pay, the funds are paid to you in your next Shopify Payments payout.
If Klarna finalizes the transaction before the customer returns to checkout, then their paid order is created, or an error message is displayed to tell the customer why the transaction was declined.
If Klarna is still finalizing the transaction when the customer returns to checkout, then their order is created with the Payment pending status. This is designed to prevent the customer from getting stuck waiting, and potentially abandoning their checkout.
Capturing payments manually
You can change the way that you capture payments in the Payments section of your Shopify admin. The manual payment capture option applies to all payments, not just Klarna payments.
If you have configured your settings to capture funds manually, then you don't automatically receive money from Klarna orders. To get paid, capture the payment manually as soon as it's authorized. When you capture your payment manually, you're charged the Shopify Payments processing fee based on the amount captured at that time.
For Pay Later orders, you have until midnight Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on the 28th calendar day from when the order was placed to capture the payment. If you don't capture the payment within that time, then the payment expires and becomes void. For example, if a customer places an order on January 1 at 14:00, then the payment authorization period expires on January 28 at midnight UTC.
Consider setting your payment settings to capture payments manually and wait to capture a payment until after the order is fulfilled. If you use this workflow, then the customer receives their payment link close to when they receive their order, and the 14 days that they have to pay closely match the 14 days they have to decide to keep the order.
Refunds with Klarna for Shopify Payments
If you refund a transaction processed by Klarna, then the processing fee that's charged to you by Shopify Payments isn't refunded. The payment processing rates that you're charged for customer card purchases with Shopify Payments depend on the subscription plan that you have for your Shopify account.
Klarna allows refunds to be processed within 180 days of the initial charge of an order. If 180 days have passed from the date of the initial charge, then it's no longer possible to refund through Klarna. If you want to refund an order after 180 days, then you must work with the customer to return the funds to them using an external service.
Disputes with Klarna for Shopify Payments
If a customer files a dispute on an order that was paid for using Klarna with Shopify Payments, then the process is handled in the same way as a standard Shopify Payments card transaction dispute. Learn more about chargebacks with Shopify Payments.
Customers can raise return disputes for items they have returned but haven't received refunds for. To ensure the dispute is legitimate, Klarna validates the order's tracking information and confirms this information with the customer.
Refunds and disputes on orders processed through the legacy version of Klarna for Shopify Payments
If your store is located in Austria, Germany, or Sweden and you activated Klarna on or before September 26, 2025, then disputes opened before that date follow a different resolution path. If a customer created a dispute before September 26, 2025, then the dispute is handled through the legacy version's email submission flow. If a customer opens a dispute after September 26, 2025, then the dispute is managed in the same way as Shopify Payments card transaction disputes, even if the order was created before September 26, 2025.
Processing fees
If you refund a transaction processed by the legacy version of Klarna, then the processing fee charged to you by Shopify Payments isn't refunded. Processing fees are determined by the subscription plan on your Shopify account. For more information about Shopify Payment fees, refer to the Shopify Pricing page for your location.
Refund times
Klarna allows refunds to be processed within 180 days of the initial charge of an order. If 180 days have passed from the date of the initial charge, then it's no longer possible to refund through a Klarna payment option. If you want to refund an order after 180 days, then work with the customer to return the funds to them using an external service.
Disputes and chargebacks
If a chargeback is opened against an order, then the customer is encouraged to contact you directly. Klarna contacts the customer if the dispute isn't resolved after 21 days. Klarna then contacts you by email about the dispute and provides you with the Klarna order number. You can use the Klarna order number in your Shopify admin to find your order. You have 7 days to respond to the dispute notification from Klarna. If you don't respond to the notification in 7 days, then the dispute is closed.
If a customer partially returns or fully returns an order, then the return is recorded as a dispute and must be managed in the same way.

Klarna offers three payment options for your customers. The available Klarna payment options are presented to your customer when they are redirected to the Klarna website, and are automatically determined based on factors including your store location and the customer's order history.
