    Microsoft Update and Now Windows Live Mail emails won't open

    Do hope somebody can help. I am elderly and non techie.....
    Following last night's Microsoft update I find that emails are still coming in but they won't open.
    The reply and send options are also greyed out.
    In the panel where the email would be displayed is a message saying "Message could not be displayed. Windows Live Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message"
    I can still access my Folders and can access and deal with emails in Virgin Webmail.
    My windows version is Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.388
    Many thanks

    I take it you’re with Virginmedia as you mention virgin?
    Are you using pop for incoming mail?
    There’s some problems with Virginmedia & email accounts, some are having password errors even though they can log in to webmail while others receive an ‘account (or mailbox) unavailable’ message.

    Thanks Virginia.
    I don't understand pop for incoming email - sorry
    But I do know that I'm getting and sending email OK on the laptop I'm using for this forum.
    And as I said Virgin webmail works OK
    So is it likely to be a Virgin problem - bearing in mind that all was well until the Update on that computer?

    The incoming server will either be pop or imap.

    I would try a set up the account again using imap:
    imap.virginmedia.com
    SSL yes
    Port 993

    smtp.virginmedia.com
    SSL yes
    Port 465

    Thanks everyone for your help
    Unfortunately none of these solutions seemed to work so I'm ditching Live Mail for eM Client which seems similar.

    I’ve checked my Live Mail & my NTL accounts now works fine so either VM are fixing the problem slowly or there’s something going on with your version.
    If you wish to continue trying please post back with this information:
    Which Live Mail version are you using - 2011 or 2012?
    Have you tried repairing Windows Live Essentials?

    I had to help a friend update to 2004 a few weeks back, and (as expected, because I'd read about it), WLM refused to send/receive (forget which). The answer was found here https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...b-98cde1bbdb90 in the post by L.Heilig, which involved manual registry changes. May not be a nice way to fix things, but in the absence of a better method...

    ...typical: same answer as already posted in the link by Bastet. But O do know it worked for me.

    Try this:
    Good day.

    I am Michael, a Microsoft Community member and a fellow Windows 10 user like you. I hope I can help you on your concern.

    It's possible the Windows Live Mail got corrupted after the update, please perform the following below in the registry:
    1. click Windows Key + R (to open run)
    2. in the run type and enter: REGEDIT
    3. Go to Computer > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows Live Mail
    4. Create these 3 DWORD entries (if they didnt exist) or change to 1 if they exist

    RecreateFolderIndex = 1
    RecreateStreamIndex = 1
    RecreateUIDLIndex = 1

    5. Restart Windows Live Mail.

    Sincerely
    Mike
