City of Toronto Signs On As Mohawk Medbuy's Newest Member

Mohawk Medbuy Corporation (MMC) and the City of Toronto announced today that MMC will procure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) products for the City as part of an innovative new agreement.

With more than 2.9 million people, Toronto is one of the world’s most diverse and vibrant cities. Like other major centres around the globe, COVID-19 has brought an overwhelming demand for PPE, calling for a reliable solution to ensure ongoing supply. The innovative partnership between Toronto and Mohawk Medbuy – a not-for-profit, shared services organization – will ensure front line workers, emergency responders, those working with individuals experiencing homelessness, and staff at City-owned long-term care homes have the PPE they need.

For MMC, this represents an important milestone in extending its support to other public sectors. The Burlington-based organization provides collaborative, value-based procurement for hospitals and other care providers across Ontario, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island that saves the health care sector millions of dollars annually. At the onset of the pandemic in March, the Ontario Government turned to Mohawk Medbuy to help lead the province’s sourcing, warehousing and distribution of PPE. Additionally, all personal protective equipment is put through MMC’s stringent quality assurance program by their clinical team of registered nurses to ensure it meets the standards necessary to safeguard Ontario’s frontline workers.

“We’re extremely pleased to welcome the City of Toronto as not only our newest Member but also as our first municipality,” said Tony DiEmanuele, President and CEO of MMC. “We were able to assist them with PPE early on in the pandemic, which led to discussions about the potential of a more formal relationship. We have the expertise and relationships with PPE manufacturers to provide immediate support to Toronto and a scalable platform to assist other municipalities with their procurement across a range of products and services.”

“Having quality-controlled PPE readily available to protect those who are serving Toronto residents during COVID-19 and beyond is top priority,” said Heather Taylor, Toronto’s Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer. “Entering into this business relationship allows the City to leverage MMC’s buying power, strengthening the City’s supply chain and ensuring we continue to meet the PPE demands necessary for staff to safety do their job.”
