Pros of working at American Express

Flexibility in my schedule. As long as I’m meeting my metrics I sort of make my own schedule each day. They provide a monthly auto allowance and a great salary. Management is very understanding of when “life happens,” which makes caring for my children feel guiltless in relation to occasionally missing work.

Pros of working at American Express

Most jobs are remote so you can work from home. You don't have any daily traffic to have to meet in the office before you can start your day. You get up and have your plans done in an order that works best for you and the client you are meeting.

Cons of working at American Express

Even though it says you work from home, you are actually on the road in client meetings for 3 days a week, some that can be over 3 hours drive from your remote office.

Great to be able to set your own schedule and who and where you want to meet; You can make your day and week flexible and work for you the best without having to be at your desk working. As long as you're making appointments, meeting the people and getting new clients or increased use clients, then you'll be left a lot for the most part.

I ~~may not have~~ didn't read all the questions, but can you explain what your roles/responsibilities were exactly? I dont quite understand what a concierge's job entails, especially one for a credit card....

My day went like this, Got to work, and had to swipe to get through revolving doors into the bay. After logging into my computer, I would load the program used to pull up member info, I would open google, ticketmaster, program we used to travel information, opentable.com, and our online database for our car service. I would then read check all of my emails, read CNN, TMZ, Perez, and any other news that was floating around. I would then check my "plate". The plate is all the work that was assigned to me, organized by promise date. The promise date is the time given to the client on when we think we could complete the request and give them confirmation. I would go through each request, normally given 10-25 to start, and prioritize based on how quickly I could do them, and time zones. I worked the early shift, so I would do all of my international reservations first, Paris, Rome, London... I would also have to keep note if I had any hard to get into restaurants. Some reservation lines open at 9am and you have to call RIGHT at that time to have any hope of someone picking up and you getting a table. Once my reservations were done, or time sensitive orders, I would move on to the bigger stuff. Travel destination information, pricing information. We were given constant email updates on upcoming onsale times. We knew if an onsale for say, Justin Bieber was coming up, to not make any promise dates during that onsale time, unless absolutely necessary. On big onsale dates, all hands were on deck to get as many clients tickets. We used ticketmaster. Nothing fancy,. If the event was sold out, or your specified section was sold out, we would pass your request to a member on the ticket team, who would reach out to our brokers. We work 8 hour shifts with 2 15 min breaks a a half hour lunch. Typical inbound call center environment. Nice office, nice lunch room.

How did you get the job?

I was working on call at a hospital, not getting enough hours. I was desperate for a job, so I hit up monster and applied to everything. I was sitting in my basement one day when I get a call. This lady explains to me that a call center is hiring, inbound, no sales. That I will have to book reservations and help high end clients. I was skeptical. Didn't even know what a concierge was. So I went for the interview and had to do a test. The test was to see how good and how quickly I could find information online. I was offered the job and I was still skeptical. The office looked nice, but it seemed too good to be true. I had 4 weeks of training (which they've since cut down quite a lot, I think to 2 weeks now which is insane.) The training consisted of showing us the programs, customer service, how to talk to people, how to sound knowledgeable when we had no *** clue what they were talking about, and mostly just the areas of where we had to handle the most requests. We focused mostly on New York City, and Las Vegas. I worked there for 3 years before moving out west to become a concierge at a high end hotel.

What was the craziest request and were you able to complete the request?

Craziest was a guy who gave me a list of concept cars that he wanted. He knew none of them were being made, but he wanted me to call each one and find out who would make one personally for him. One was a little roadster, had three wheels, (it was a few years ago, I'm sorry I can't remember the name of it), and another was an ATV that turned into a Seadoo when it hit the water. Those 2, out of a list of about 15, were the only ones who would speak with me and didn't laugh at the request. They gave me a dollar amount and were willing to make one just for my client. The client was incredibly thankful and appreciative. If he ended up getting one, IDK.

How often were you asked to do something illegal or that would breach another clients security? Stories?

It wasn't a huge amount, because most clients knew what their limitations were. Some did ask for us to find hookers or escorts or rub n tugs, but we just always politely told them we were not able to. We were not allowed to give request information to anyone other than the person who made the request. We would have wifes or husbands calling in asking what their SO's last request was for, and we were not allowed to tell them a single detail. Even something as mundane as flowers or gifts, we could not tell. It was a common occurrence that a husband or wife would order a gift for their bf or gf on the side and us giving out that information would be a huge breach of confidentiality.

Whats the most hilarious/asinine request you've gotten? The one you really had to dig deep to not laugh about while taking the request.

A client was on a business trip in another state. He said he ate something that really upset his stomach and right in the middle of the conference, where he was on some sort of panel, he *** his pants. He tried to pretend it didn't happen and ignore it, but I guess the other people on the panel started to smell it. When he finally excused himself, some slipped down his leg and he left a little pooh trail to the bathroom. He called me from the bathroom, mortified, but trying to laugh at the situation. I called the hotel concierge, who ran across the street, bought him a pair of underwear, socks and pants, and brought it to the man in the bathroom. Just the detail he put into the story, had me laughing so hard. He was laughing with me and was happy that I wasn't judging. Because he was so nice and I felt so bad, without the gentleman knowing, I got the hotel concierge to fill his bath, and put some peptol bismal in his room for when he got back.
