About the Error

If you try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger you receive this error code which prevents you from accessing the service.

This error is caused by issues with your Internet connection or by settings in Internet Explorer to name a few things. You can begin by troubleshooting your firewall and the router for your Internet connection. If Internet connectivity is established through a router you can determine if there is a problem with the firewall on the router by attaching the modem or network cable directly to your PC. Once you attach the cable try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger. If you can sign in to the service without any issues or error messages then the problem may be related to the router configuration. If this is the problem you can refer to your manufacturer’s manual or documentation on how to properly reset the router. This may take some time because when you reset the router it can revert to the default settings depending upon the brand of router you have. It may also be necessary to contact support for help in restoring custom configurations and activating port 1863 through the firewall in your router.

If you are still experiencing problems you can try to correct the error to change the settings in Internet Explorer. Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools on the main toolbar and then choose Internet Options from the drop down menu. Click on Connections and then choose Local Area Network settings. Remove the check mark from the box next to Use a proxy server for your LAN. When you are finished click on Advanced and then choose Security. Remove the check mark next to Check for server certificate revocation if a check mark is present in the box. Verify that Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 both have a check mark placed in the box and click OK. Try to sign in Windows Live Messenger again.

You can also try clearing the temporary Internet files. Click on Tools on the main toolbar in Internet Explorer and then choose Internet Options from the drop down menu. When the Internet Options window opens, click on General and locate Temporary Internet Files. Click on Delete Files and Delete Cookies. Click on the Advanced tab and then choose Security. Remove the check mark next to Check for server certificate revocation if a check mark is present in the box. Verify that Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 both have a check mark placed in the box and click OK. Try to sign in Windows Live Messenger again.
