Audible password not accepted/Computer not Connected to Internet

So I've just installed iTunes onto a new Windows 10 machine. I tried version 12.6, but for reasons probably too boring to go into, it wasn't working for me, and I uninstalled and put 10.7 back.

Everything's working fine except my Audible books. When I try and import them I get asked for a password it brings up a 'Do you want to allow this to make changes' dialogue and on saying yes, it immediately tells me that my username or password is not accepted. I know my usename and password. What I'm putting in is right.

I notice on the Advanced menu that I have the option to De-authorise my Audible account, which seems a sensible thing to try, but I get the same thing. Right password, wrong response.

I notice however that there's a help option on the password dialogue, and when I try that I get told "iTunes Help is unavailable because your computer isn’t connected to the Internet." Except that it is, I can see it downloading a podcast as it tells me that it's not connected to the internet.

So I conclude that something's got iTunes into thinking that it's not even worth trying to test out the password. Does anyone have any idea how to make it think again?

FWIW, as far as I can remember, the Audible account was one of the things that worked right with 12.6, but I'm not going back there.

You need iTunes 12.6.5.3 or 12.7.2.58 or better to be able to work with the iTunes Store (including access to Audible accounts) due to changes in encryption requirements brought in by the payments industry. See About App Store and iTunes Store availability - Apple Support for background. Visit https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ to download the current version of iTunes or Deploy apps in a business environment with iTunes - Apple Support to access version 12.6.5.3. See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows Update - Apple Community if you have any trouble updating.

There is a bug in the last two builds of iTunes when the media folder isn't in the standard location with respect to the library. You could install iTunes 12.9.3.3 (see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates - Apple Community, links to recent builds at the bottom), wait for the next one in the hope that it is fixed there, or see Make a split library portable - Apple Community and put your library in a shape that isn't affected by the issue and is easier to backup and move around in future. I'm not aware that 12.6.5.3 has the same issue with split libraries, but since all of my libraries are in the standard portable shape I could have missed that.

Time to invest in DRM removal tools I guess.

Alternatively, maybe it's time to mention those boring reasons why you don't want to use the latest version of iTunes. Then perhaps we could solve both issues. Whatever your dislike of the current iTunes is, we may be able to suggest the current method of doing what you want.

As tt2 mentions, it'll be far less risky. Don't overlook the fact that the new change (the encryption that you don't like) is designed to protect your account/money.

Wasn't really wanting to get into long discussions about 12, it seems generally panned but:

The big killer problem is that it won't retain the drive I store files on. As is not exactly uncommon, I have a small SSD drive as C: and a honking big raid where my files live. 12.6 repeatedly reset the library location to be on C:, and setting it back required 10 hours of scanning the library. And then it reset. I was using it for about a week, and it did that five times. Utterly unacceptable.

It also suffered from memory leaks, meaning that if iTunes was left running then the pc would clog up.

Petty by comparison, the podcast interfaces (why in Loki's name have two different interfaces for full library and unplayed?) was annoying. I could have lived with it though, if not for having to check and repair the library location all the time.

Audiobooks are not a major part of my listening life. I can work around this problem.
