Sign in as different user has always been available – which was very helpful to test different users / permissions etc. Sadly this disappeared in SharePoint 2013 (on-premises). Lucky for us – this is still easy to do in SharePoint Online. This post will show you how to do that and I will also give you a workaround for forcing your browser to ask for the credentials when working in SharePoint 2013 (on-premises) where this is no longer available.

Tools: SharePoint Online; SharePoint On-premises 2013
Description: Sign in as different user – workaround

In Office 365 / SharePoint Online, you will have an option to click on the photo of the user signed in, it will open a dropdown allowing you to sign out and return you to the sign in screen. Here you can sign in as a different user.

sign in as different user

In SharePoint 2013 (on-premises), simply add the bold section behind your normal site url http://siteurl/_layouts/closeConnection.aspx?loginasanotheruser=true

The browser will then ask for credentials and you can sign in as a different user.

According to Microsoft: “This option uses an unsupported browser feature which is unreliable and causes other issues.” So it’s not compatible with all browsers / versions.

Thanks Palesa Sikwane for sharing this tip with me today!

There you go!! See ya ‘all tomorrow.

Overview of my challenge: As an absolute lover of all things Microsoft, I’ve decided to undertake the challenge, of writing a blog every single day, for the next 365 days. Crazy, I know. And I’ll try my best, but if I cannot find something good to say about Office 365 and the Tools it includes for 365 days, I’m changing my profession. So let’s write this epic tale of “Around the Office in 365 Days”. My ode to Microsoft Office 365.
