The document summarizes the college's transition from Moodle1 to Moodle2. It discusses the timeline of evaluating and testing Moodle2 starting in 2010, training sessions in 2012, and the process of transferring over 270 courses from the old to new system over 6 days in April 2012. Some issues in the transfer process included fixing labels, glossaries, books, and wikis. Support and feedback sessions were provided to staff on the new system.
3. We are there! – but we need a
bit of help for students
Pdf at present,
but plan for this
to become presented
via Xerte . . . but that
is for the summer!
5. We’re here – but why? . . . and how?
Moodle2 has things we felt worth having . . .
• Completion tracking
• File Picker
• Docking (currently switched off, going on over autumn half term)
• Improved wiki
• Comments block . . . thinking about this one!
. . . from June 2012 Moodle 1.9
is not being supported
We are using 2.2.3
6. So to the how – a bit of history
• Moved to Moodle in 2006 (from Teknical’s Virtual
Campus)
• Moodle4U was 1.9.7 – regular
upgrades, generally without staff
knowledge, although timed to coincide with
INSET where necessary – decision not to upgrade
from this until Moodle2
• Host ourselves
• ‘Out of the box’ – add in Books, Games (with
glossaries) and Questionnaires
• Generally staff found Moodle to be a ‘breath of
fresh air’, but use it mainly for static materials
7. Move to Moodle2?
• Meetings with IT Support and Manager – autumn
2010
• ILT Facilitators’ Meeting
• Proposal to Senior Management Group
• Decided to move half term summer term
• Kept an eye on discussions on Moodle.org forums
and JISC mail
• Decided not to move half term summer term 2011
– plan for half term summer term 2012
• Linda took part in ‘Introducing Moodle 2.0’ – online
course with Jim Judges, ULCC – Feb/Mar 2011
8. Move to Moodle2 (cont)
• Chris Shearing build moodle2test end Nov 2011 (internal only)
• Linda developed moodle2test ready for INSET
• INSET – familiarisation - mid-Jan 2012
• Linda to South Devon College end Jan 2012
• Linda and Manager to London (Moodle 2: Making the
Leap) end Feb 2012
• Grateful for help/ideas/info/support through VLE and e-
Learning forums
• Chris prepared external visibility for moodle2 end Apr –
Moodle4U would remain ‘indefinitely’ (Staff told at least
until end Dec 2012)
• Chris built fresh install moodle2 (2.2.3)
• Course transfer – staff and students cohorts and editing
rights
10. How long?
• 273 courses (of 401 courses in Moodle4U) –
rationalised categories
• 6 days – 2 members of staff
• 1 member of staff working on ‘refinements’
for 4 days
11. Some of the issues we encountered
• Labels, where pasted from WORD
• Glossaries – export/import - images
• Moodle Books – links within Moodle + images
(legacy files)
• Wikis
13. INSET and beyond

• ILT Working Party overview yesterday –
IT ‘specialist’ from each department
• A2/IB year 2 teaching on going during this half
term
