There’s still no word on when coffee shops are going to reopen so, if you’re anything like us, you’re probably craving a proper caffeine hit — especially if you’re working from home and don’t have access to the office espresso machine.

The obvious solution is to buy one yourself, but the best models can be pricey, and you might not want to splurge on one at this uncertain time. Luckily, Lavazza has a solution — sign up for one of its coffee pod subscriptions and they’ll throw in a machine for just £1.

£1 at Lavazza

Yes, that’s right, just £1. The company is offering four different machines to choose from, including the GHI’s best pod model, the Desea, which earned a score of 91/100 from the GHI — so that’d be our pick.

Alternatively, there’s the Idola (81/100), the Jolie — which is an espresso machine only, if you don’t like milky coffees — (86/100) and the Jolie & Milk, which is still untested (as yet!).

So, what’s the catch? Well, there isn’t one, really. We did the maths and we came away feeling pretty happy about it. Here’s the breakdown:

You have to commit to eight deliveries of 10 boxes — 160 pods — costing £45 each time (you can choose deliveries either every two weeks, month, two months or three months). So, if you and your partner both had one morning coffee every day (14 a week) then a delivery would serve you virtually the full three months. If you both had two coffees a day (28 a week) it’d last a month — with some left over for guests.

Over the course of the eight deliveries, you’re therefore committing to pay £360 in total — for a top-scoring coffee machine and 1,280 pods.

We tried to scout out the best price for 1,280 capsules to see if we could find them much cheaper elsewhere — and we couldn’t. The lowest we saw for a bulk order of this number would cost £350 on Amazon. But, obviously, buying these would mean you wouldn’t get the free machine or the convenience having the capsules delivered without you having to remember to reorder them.

So, all in all, we think this is a really great offer: a top-performing machine, pods delivered fuss-free within a timeframe of your choice and a saving of up to £188. You don’t even have to worry about the environmental impact of the used capsules, either, as they’re 100% compostable and biodegradable.

We’re sold. You can sign up for this service on the Lavazza website here.
