ear after year, it is humbling to create the Honor Roll of Investors—a publication born out of gratitude for the blessings of our beloved supporters.

Our inspiration is our Founders: the Daughters of Charity and the Christian Brothers. We strive to embody the faithful devotion, passion for the mission and their generosity in all of our interactions and decision-making at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory. It is with our Founders’ charisms in our hearts, and alongside our dedicated parents and alumni, faculty and staff, community partners and financial investors, that we are able to continuously provide the highest quality Lasallian Vincentian Catholic education to the students entrusted to our care. On behalf of the entire SHC community, we thank you for the many ways in which you support this wonderful educational institution. Looking back on the 2018–19 academic year, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our investors. Our parent community raised $1,765,628 through the Parent Pledge Program, and our students came together to raise nearly $215,000 at the 29th Annual Walkathon. Special events held throughout the year, including the Spring Gala and the 42nd Annual Irish Invitational, brought in substantial funds while serving as community-building opportunities for those who believe in and care deeply about our mission. In its second year, our 1DayIrish social media campaign brought in nearly $37,000—another testament to the SHC community’s dedication to our students today and tomorrow. This past academic year, as in many previous years, our extraordinary admissions programming—Irish for a Day, Parent Visits, and Open House—filled to the brim, demonstrating that interest in the SHC educational experience is steady and strong, and that SHC’s reputation as one of the most sought-after Catholic high schools in the Bay Area remains. Throughout the year, our students did what they do best—they flourished in the classroom, they radiated onstage, they dazzled on the field and on the court, they served with compassionate hearts. Finally, as the successful 2020Vision campaign reaches its culminating year, we have taken the first steps in implementing our Master Plan—one that envisions a thriving SHC community far into the future. KEVIN WALSH ’39 & LUCILLE WALSH: HONORING THE PAST, ENSURING THE FUTURE

t was 80 years ago this past spring that Kevin Walsh ’39 graduated from Sacred Heart High School. His experience over the course of his time as a student instilled in him such a sense of loyalty and pride, that he and his wife, Lucille, included a generous bequest to SHC in their estate plan. Their gift will do exactly what their family knew they wanted—provide the highest quality Lasallian Vincentian Catholic education for generations to come. After graduation, Kevin served in the US Navy during World War II. As a trained engineer, Kevin was a master craftsman who was interested in materials ranging from wood to metal to various kinds of mechanical objects. Kevin and Lucille met as neighbors in Noe Valley in 1948. After Lucille's first husband passed, Kevin and Lucille started dating and then married in December of 1972. They lived in Twin Peaks until Kevin retired in 1981 when they moved to Santa Rosa, near Kevin's two older brothers. While Kevin never had any children of his own, he is remembered as a wonderful step-dad and grandfather for Lucille's two daughters, Joan and Kacey, and their three children and four step-children. At the time of Lucille's passing in October, 2018, she had five great-grandchildren. Kevin built a workshop at their home in Santa Rosa where he created beautiful pieces for their family—including a vintage-style automobile built from parts he fashioned himself. Lucille loved her family, travel, volunteer work, bowling, playing cards and following her favorite sports teams: the San Francisco Giants and the 49ers. Kevin’s step-son-in-law, Jake Karmendy, remembers, “Kevin always spoke about his days at Sacred Heart fondly and with obvious pride. He was Irish through and through. Like many who suffered through the Great Depression and WWII, Kevin valued education.”

SHC students inspired the entire community by raising nearly $215,000 at the close of the 29th Annual Walkathon on September 19, 2018. We set an ambitious goal, and with the help of family and friends our students surpassed it. Proceeds from the 2018 Walkathon supported the transformation of our English classrooms, the Student Launch Initiative, student scholarships and student travel grants. SHC extends its gratitude to all who made gifts to the Spring Gala: Club ’80s, the 42nd Annual Irish Invitational Golf Tournament & Fightin’ Irish Athletic Dinner, the 29th Annual Walkathon, and the 4th Annual Billy Mac Memorial Golf Tournament. Event sponsors are acknowledged throughout the Honor Roll, appearing in their respective giving-level categories. We are thrilled to share these exciting highlights from each of the events.

Fundraising Events 2018-19

BILLY MAC MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT In its fourth year, friends and family of Bill McDonagh ’67 hosted golfers at the beautiful Crystal Springs Golf Course on October 1, 2018. Later, the golfers were joined by additional friends and family to enjoy a dinner in celebration of Bill. The event raised nearly $25,000 in support of Sacred Heart Cathedral scholarships. SPRING GALA: CLUB ’80s On March 30, 2019, more than 450 guests came together in support of SHC students at the Annual Spring Gala. Our premier community-wide fundraiser hosted by the SHC Parents Association raised more than a quarter of a million dollars to fund classroom renovations, collaborative learning advancements, faculty professional development, student scholarships and more. IRISH INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT & FIGHTIN’ IRISH ATHLETIC DINNER The sold-out 2019 Irish Invitational and Fightin’ Irish Athletics Night took place on a gorgeous June day with 144 golfers playing the Lake Merced Golf Club. After a successful 18 holes, guests enjoyed dinner in support of SHC Football and Baseball. The event raised more than $100,000.

30th ANNUAL WALKATHON BREAKS RECORDS

his academic year marked a milestone 30-year anniversary for SHC’s only student-led fundraiser—the Walkathon. Inspired by our mission, the dedication of the Christian Brothers and the Daughters of Charity, and with an immeasurable supply of Irish Spirit, our students raised more than $240,000 this year—a school record! Over the course of the last three decades the Walkathon has helped to fund countless improvements to the SHC student experience including but not limited to: the transformation of our science facilities, the Fitness Center, the Sister Teresa Piro, DC, Student Life Center, the Herbst Library & Information Center, the Strength & Conditioning Weight Room, the Student Launch Initiative, student travel grants, scholarships and more. This year, proceeds from the Walkathon will benefit the renovation of what will soon be known as the De Paul Gallery—an informal gathering and collaborative learning space for students located on the De Paul Campus for the Arts.

As it has each year since its inception, the Walkathon ended with a celebratory walk through Golden Gate Park. On a beautiful September morning, the Polo Fields buzzed with excited students, enthusiastic parent volunteers, faculty and staff. Per SHC tradition, the football team worked hard setting up Lindley Meadow to feed the entire SHC student body while dozens of parents flipped burgers and roasted hot dogs for lunch. As the students made their way through the Walkathon route, they were met by faculty cheer squads along the way. The face of this year’s Walkathon, Advancement Associate Erica Hipp ’13, says, “This year's Walkathon was a huge success—one that was accomplished because of the hard work and support from our students, faculty, staff, parent volunteers, and more. What better way to end a milestone year than with a record-breaking fundraising total!”

LAUREN WILD ’99 • ALWAYS MOVING FORWARD

he library was still on the first floor of the La Salle Academic Building, often referred to as “the basement,” when Lauren Wild ’99 started her high school journey. By her junior year, she set up her very first email account in the new Herbst Library & Information Center on the sixth floor. Today, Lauren serves at SHC as the Database Manager in the Office of Advancement. It’s a role she has mastered over the years, since her first days as a Walkathon volunteer during her summer breaks at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. After she completed her undergraduate studies in environmental engineering and received a masters in civil and environmental engineering, she got a call. “They Advancement Office remembered me when there was a job opening, and I thought, ‘Cool, this is definitely something I can do.’”

It was at a recent Dreamforce that she stumbled upon an interesting opportunity to learn about change management—that is, the method by which organizations can prepare and support individuals to adopt change to drive organizational success. As an educational institution with roots that reach back more than a century-anda-half in San Francisco, SHC is no stranger to change. Today, as technological advancements deliver change faster than ever before, Lauren has gained a skillset that equips her to be ready, and to help her coworkers face, embrace and adapt to change.

“I love getting to know the students … I want to give them what I had.”

Fourteen years later, Lauren’s dedication to SHC is stronger than ever. “Genuine concern and love for this community keeps me here. I love getting to know the students and when I look back on my experience here, I want to give them what I had.”

Lauren was able to take advantage of this welltimed opportunity thanks to the SHC Staff Innovation Fund, a professional learning grant opportunity for current faculty and staff members funded by SHC’s generous investors. “I learned that so many great ideas for change fail because there isn’t enough work done on the front end. One of the biggest questions posed at the conference was ‘why are people afraid of change?’ If we can unpack that, we can get to the root of that fear and ensure that we’re always moving forward.”

In her role as Database Manager, Lauren helps to ensure that SHC creates, tracks, and maintains meaningful relationships with our investors and community members. She was one of the driving forces behind the implementation of Salesforce software for SHC’s Advancement and Admissions offices and she has presented her work at Dreamforce, Salesforce’s annual

When considering the importance of the Staff Innovation Fund, Lauren says, “It allows faculty and staff to do something they’re passionate about and that reignites our excitement for this work. For me, receiving the grant made me feel valued—SHC really cares about its people and the school wants faculty and staff to continue on their learning journey.”

AN SHC LEGACY: THE SCUDDER FAMILY

eloved SHC community members, John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73 and Judy Scudder, were honored this past August in two beautiful naming ceremonies for the John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73 La Salle Entrance and the Judy Scudder Librarian’s Office.

John’s SHC story started in 1969 when he arrived to the Sacred Heart High School campus as a ninth grader. After graduation, he received his bachelor’s from St. Mary’s College of California and went onto receive a master’s in secondary education from San Francisco State University. Then, he returned to his alma mater where he would serve for the next 40 years—as a teacher, coach, dean, principal and president. His work and commitment to the Lasallian and Vincentian charisms have impacted the lives of countless students, colleagues, and friends. It was in this spirit, and with the help of a generous donation from an anonymous investor, that the John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73 La Salle Entrance was named. At the dedication, Vice President for Advancement & Enrollment John Gumina ’91 shared, “When greeting him each day and asking him how it was going, John would often joyfully reply, ‘Just living the mission.’ Over time, I came to realize that this wasn’t just playful banter. John’s zealous commitment to our mission is real—and it is admirable.” Sacred Heart High School hired Judy Scudder in 1975, and she holds the distinction as the very first female faculty member hired at the school. Judy retired in 2017 with four decades of service at SHC as librarian and director of library services. Judy saw the library through its many iterations—including the construction of its current location, the sixth floor of the La Salle Academic building. When she began her SHC career, the library held only 40 students. Today, 200 students can fill the expansive, beautifully lit library space. In a touching address from Assistant Director of Community Life Julia Rinaldi said, “You created home right here at SHC exactly the way our Holy Founders directed us to do. You created a place of warmth, wonder, safety, laughters, adventury, equality, innovation, inquiry and so much joy.” (Photos clockwise from top) John F. Dear Friends, The mission of Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory is fulfilled through community members like you who help sustain the important work of the Christian Brothers and the Daughters of Charity.
