Samsara certifies ELD solution with FMCSA

Aug. 10, 2017
Internet-connected sensor and fleet management system provider Samsara announced yesterday it has certified its electronic logging device (ELD) solution on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) ELD registry.

Internet-connected sensor and fleet management system provider Samsara announced yesterday it has certified its electronic logging device (ELD) solution on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) ELD registry. The product is designed for fleets ranging from family-owned trucking companies to Fortune 500 enterprises.

Jake's Finer Foods has selected the ELD product, and Jason Boldt, transportation manager, said he's glad to be getting ahead of the mandate requiring the use of ELDs this December. "Compliance doesn't keep me up at night because I know Samsara is on top of it. I don't worry about it," Boldt said. "Honestly, all of Samsara's alerts and truly-live tracking — watching each truck drive down the road and knowing exactly what time it arrived and departed — give me tremendous peace of mind."

Samsara's ELD-compliant Hours of Service solution includes plug-and-play vehicle gateways and a mobile app that runs on any Android or Apple iOS device. According to the company, the product features 15-minute installation, an intuitive interface for drivers, and reports and alerts for compliance managers.

"At Samsara, we've purpose-built our product to make it easy for fleet managers, safety and compliance officers, and drivers to achieve compliance now and in the future," said Billy Waldman, head of product at Samsara.

The company's data platform integrates a built-in hotspot, real-time GPS tracking, temperature monitor sensors and dashboard cameras, providing fleet managers with visibility to see the exact location and video footage for a harsh braking event on a truck, for example, or to get instant alerts of reefer temperature changes before a delivery.

"Beyond compliance, we are investing in R&D to develop technologies that reduce accidents, improve customer service, and lower operating costs," Waldman said.

ELD compliance functionality is included in the latest version of the Samsara Driver App and gateway software. Existing customers will receive the new compliance features, at no cost, via a seamless over-the-air software update.
